WIP - Skipping Stones

A few weeks ago, I drove up to Fifis Fabricology on the Gold Coast to do a "Skipping Stones" quilt workshop with Kelley.

The pattern requires a jelly roll but as I have quite a bit of a stash of Parson Gray "Curious Nature" fabrics, I easily cut enough WOF strips prior to the class.

And these are the 2 blocks that I made whilst were there - I am probably going to make 12 blocks for each quilt to make it larger as I think this would be a perfect quilt to make for my twin boys who turn 18 next year.

This is the wonderful class sample that Kelley made which I had seen at the Quilt show last year. She has also used Parson Grey fabrics - a mix of Curious Nature and Empire I think...

Anyway, it is good to have made a start on the first of these two quilts - I have a year to work on them as the boys only turned 17 last week:) I am trying to keep the quilts a surprise though so hoping to work on them further when the boys go away to Cambodia for a school Immersion in October.

WiP Wednesday - Hashtag quilt

After a few days of sewing, I have been able to get the Hashtag quilt blocks made and the top sewn together over the weekend.

This is one of the projects from Camille Roskelleys fabulous "Pre-Cut Piecing Made Simple" class on Craftsy.

Like with the Terra Australis Swoon mini quilt I made earlier this year, I decided to combine some Terra Australis fabrics from both the first and second ranges for this quilt as they went together so well.

These blocks are chain pieced so came together really quickly and easily.

I decided to go with a bit of a colour order arrangement for the quilt, and also left off the outer border.

I was sent some of the Kangaroos in Kingfisher fabric to bind one of the #Sewing for Sydney quilts earlier this year and loved how it looked, so have the Kangaroos in Ocean set aside to use for the binding and I managed to pick up some meterage of one of the other prints for the backing when I picked up my quilt from Rainbow Patchwork recently.

Norway quilt top

I was home alone last weekend whilst my 3 teenagers were at the "Splendour in the Grass" music festival at Byron Bay, and my hubby was also away all week camping near Tenterfield so I managed to get quite a bit of sewing done and I have now finished the Norway quilt top.

As I had already pre-cut the fabrics for these blocks, I was able to sew each one in under 2 hours as they are all chain pieced and there are very few seams to match.

Before I sewed them altogether I did up a mosaic of the 9 blocks so I could get them into an arrangement I liked - which was much quicker and easier than dragging these 26" blocks around my lounge room floor!

I went with a colour gradient as I loved the look of the one done by Mary @classicquilter on IG - the middle block is the same colour as the binding so I wanted it to be in the centre.

I have now sent this off to be quilted at my LQS and I can't wait to see how it turns out!

WIP Wednesday: Norway quilt

My love of craft began many years ago when visiting my grandmas during the school holidays as they were always doing sewing, knitting and crocheting.

When my Grandma Joan passed away a few years ago at 91 years of age, I was given much of her crafting stash, including this pretty bundle of solids which I am now making into a quilt - actually both of my Grandmas were named Joan so this will be made in memory of the two of them. 

For this special quilt, I am using the Norway pattern by Thimbleblossoms as I happen to have 9 solids in this bundle.

I recently made a mini Norway quilt to try out this pattern and it was quite easy to do - I did have a wee bit of trouble with the borders in the mini but luckily they aren't needed in the full quilt design :)

I am using this Denyse Schmidt Piccadilly fabric for the backing and I think both of my Grandmas would approve of the pretty floral print. I also have some pink shot cotton for the binding, along with a creamy solid and a chocolatey brown for the accent colour.

 I have already made the first block which only took a couple of hours to sew.

And I have all of the rest of the fabrics cut out and ready to sew whenever I can get a little bit of sewing time...

WIP: Modern Maples

I have wanted to make one of the Modern Maples quilts for a while now so as soon I saw the Pantone colour of the year was Marsala I thought this would be a good chance to do it, so that I could incorporate it along with some other autumnal tones.

I went through my fabrics and not surprisingly, found quite a few in my Denyse Schmidt stash, including a few of the burgundy/maroon/brownish prints that fitted in with the Marsala colour - well kind of anyway.

I cut all of these fabrics into the sizes for the Maples block and have been working on them whenever I get a chance...

So this is the where I am now up to with my Marsala Maples quilt ...

Just need to sew these blocks together and start quilting!

Cotton and Steel mini quilt swap

If you are on IG, you will have seen that there are quite a few swaps going on at the moment! One of the swaps I couldn't resist joining is the Cotton and Steel mini quilt swap - I think there are over 600 participants in this swap and this time I am also a swap mama with a team of about 46 stitchers!

Cotton and Steel is an amazing fabric range that came out last year from a team of 5 designers and they have taken the sewing world by storm - the second line of fabrics have just been released and they are just as gorgeous as the first!

I used some of the "August" fabrics my Sarah Watts in the belated birthday "Leo" Super Tote for my mum last year.

This is the mosaic I posted to the group  - this swap is not due until June but I have already been sewing with some of the fabrics for another project:)

WiP Wednesday: Sew Sew Modern 6 swap

One of the swaps I love is the Sew Sew Modern swap which is now up to round 6, and this time I decided to join in again.

This is the mosaic I posted to the group - I now have my partner info for this swap and have  started some sewing.

This was my initial fabric pull - a few colourful bundles of Anna Maria Horner fabrics.

I have now narrowed it down to this rainbow selection which I think will work well in the design I have decided on.

And I am now up to the quilting stage...

WIP Wednesday - Chicopee feathers quilt and binding.

A bit of a belated WIP Wednesday post but I was at work yesterday and didn't get a chance after I got home last night. Anyway, my AusModBee quilt is back from the quilters and it looks amazing! Here is a peek of the beautiful quilting:

So whilst it is still cold here, and before I get started on another "big" project,  I have the binding all ready to go to finish this quilt off.

WIP Wednesday - RLD binding.

The binding for my Red Letter Day quilt is made from Bonnie &Camille "Sundae Stripes" which are one of my all time favourite prints.

I haven't really done a scrappy binding before but after seeing some of Camilles quilts when she bought them all the way to Australia, have decided to give it a try this time. 

Some of these prints are from Ruby and a few from the newly released Miss Kate range, and I think they will go well with the Bliss flannel backing.. 

A huge thanks also to one of the lovely ladies at the RLD workshop in Brisbane who gave me some of the navy print which completed my Sundae scallop collection!.

WIP Wednesday - Red Letter Day quilt

This week I am hoping to get some more done on the RLD quilt. 

I have laid out on the lounge room floor and now have it all basted ready for quilting.
